Ampicillin is an antibiotic belonging to the aminopenicillin class, designed to combat infections in the stomach and intestines, as well as in the middle ear, sinuses, bladder, and kidneys.

Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the aminopenicillin category. Its antibacterial mechanism involves inhibiting the construction of cell walls in bacteria that are sensitive to Ampicillin. It remains stable in the acidic environment of the stomach and is easily absorbed. Ampicillin is effective against gram-positive organisms and certain gram-negative bacteria (such as salmonella, shigella, proteus, E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae, formerly known as Pfeiffer's bacillus) and is used to treat infections caused by mixed bacterial flora. Bacteria that produce penicillase are resistant to Ampicillin.

If you are allergic to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics, consult your doctor before taking this medication. Ampicillin can lead to diarrhea, so inform your doctor if you experience this symptom prior to using any diarrhea medication. Additionally, Ampicillin may yield false positives in certain urine glucose tests. If you have been taking Ampicillin for an extended period, it might become ineffective due to what is known as superinfection; therefore, notify your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or worsen.

Potential side effects include colitis, diarrhea, fever, itching, nausea, rashes, sore tongue or mouth, and vomiting.

Ampicillin can increase the effectiveness of orally taken medications that inhibit blood clotting, and it may interfere with some oral contraceptives.

Never take a double dose of Ampicillin. If you are on a twice-daily regimen and miss a dose, take it as soon as you recall, and then take the next dose 5-6 hours later. If you are taking Ampicillin three times a day, take the missed dose immediately when you remember and schedule the next one in 2-4 hours.

If you suspect you have taken an overdose of Ampicillin and are experiencing allergy symptoms (such as hives or rash), contact your doctor right away.
